About the Death Penalty

A New Genesis Community believes that all life is sacred.  We oppose the use of capital punishment because it is contrary to the teaching and example of Jesus Christ who shows us the way of overcoming evil while practicing forgiveness and compassion.

Join us in opposition to the death penalty because:

  • it devalues life and perpetuates violence

  • it is not a definitive deterrent to crime

  • sometimes it involves the execution of innocent persons

  • it is racially biased, and biased to the poor, mentally disabled, the vulnerable of our society who lack the resources to defend themselves properly

  • it deprives criminals of the opportunity for reform, restitution, or rehabilitation

  • it may deprive survivors the opportunity for experiencing forgiveness or closure.

We also stand in solidarity with those individuals and families who have experienced the loss of their loved ones.  We pray for their healing and support programs of restorative justice that work to re-establish right relationships between perpetrators and their victims.
